Since the first section of the Schuylkill River Trail was completed in 1978, Montgomery County has been the regional leader for trail development. While construction of the County’s comprehensive trail network has slowed in recent years, two new projects are slated to break ground in 2012: A section of the Chester Valley Trail in Upper Merion Township, and the upgrade of the Schuylkill Canal Towpath in Lower Providence.

In 2011, the DVRPC Regional Trails Program awarded funding to two projects in Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Commissioners were awarded $325,000 for the Chester Valley Trail Extension. The Commissioners were also awarded $170,000 for construction on the Canal Towpath Spillway Bridge.

In 2012, the DVRPC Regional Trails Program awarded funding to three projects in Montgomery County: Lower Merion Township was awarded $40,000 for a feasibility study for the Cynwyd Spur Trail. Montgomery Township was awarded $32,000 for construction of the Powerline Trail Connector. The Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association was awarded $40,000 for the SRT Phoenixville-Mont Clare Connector.

In 2013, the DVRPC Regional Trails Program awarded funding to three projects in Montgomery County: Cheltenham Township was awarded $400,000 for constructino of Phase III of the Tookany Creek Trail. Lansdale Borough was awarded $160,840 for the constructino of the Lansdale Liberty Bell Trail. The Philadelphia Mayor's Office of Transportation and Utilities was awarded $60,000 for engineering services for the Manayunk Bridge Trail connecting Manayunk to Lower Merion.
