East Coast Greenway
The East Coast Greenway represents a massive undertaking – when completed, the system will connect nearly 3,000 miles of bicycle friendly routes! That means you can hop on your bike in Canada and hop off in Key West.
The Southeast PA section of the greenway is still under construction. About a third of the 67-mile route is complete, mixing on road and car-free cycling routes, with remaining portions in the planning and design phases. The Greenway takes advantage of Bicycle Route E, trails along the Delaware River and the Schuylkill Banks, The Spring Garden bicycle lanes, and is soon to include the 58th Street Connector and the Delaware Avenue Trail from Allegheny Ave to the Betsy Ross Bridge.
Stay tuned for some very exciting potential changes to the Spring Garden bicycle lanes. Recently, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council issued an RFP for a design to make this the most bicycle friendly street in the City of Philadelphia!
Funding from the DVRPC Regional Trails Program is essential to the continued development of the East Coast Greenway. In 2011, The Regional Trails Program awarded $75,000 to the Pennsylvania Environmental Council for design of the Spring Garden Street Greenway connecting the Delaware River Trail to the Schuykill River Trail. In 2012, the program granted $12,000 to the Delaware County Planning Department for an inactive railroad right-of-way title search, as well as $60,000 to the Dealaware River Waterfront Corporation for design and construction of a segment of the Greenway between SugarHouse Casino and Penn Treaty Park.
