Spring is here, let the trail events begin!
At long last, the first new section of Schuylkill River Trail to be built in several years will be dedicated on Thursday, March 28 at 10:30am. This new segment runs from Port Royal "Avenue" in the Roxborough section of Philadlephia to the intersection of Shawmont and Nixon Streets.
A full contingent of dignitaries are expected to attend. Mayor Michael Nutter, Congressman Chaka Fattah, Councilman Curtis Jones Jr., Deputy Mayor Michael DiBerardinis will all be there to cut the ribbon. The more bicyclists and trail users in attendance the better!
Besides building a new piece of trail along a PECO right-of-way behind Nixon Street, which gently slopes down to the intersection of Shawmont and Nixon Streets, this project included widening the paved section between the Montco line and Port Royal Avenue, plus making a much improved paved connection to the Manayunk Canal Towpath.
This project was funded in part by a 2010 $23 million TIGER grant that Philadelphia won along with the City of Camden to build ten trail segments in both cities.
